The 17th NBS Hockey Tournament is scheduled for March 18-20, 2022 at the Middlebury Memorial Sports Center. We look forward to getting on the ice again after a two-year COVID hiatus! This is a major fundraiser for our little school and it’s important that we get it up and running again.

We have three games on Friday night, games all day Saturday and Sunday morning, and finals starting Sunday afternoon. I will try my best to give preference to the teams that are traveling from the furthest away. As the pools start filling up, I will try to get the schedule out to you. We are still looking to field a couple of more teams in each pool. Please pass information along to anyone who you think might be interested!

Our event is unique in that it is designed to be inclusive. NBS conceived of this tournament as a place where hockey-playing families can join and have fun. We are putting responsibility on each captain to maintain the friendly spirit of the tournament. We often have young fans in the stands, our referees are sometimes volunteers, and the folks running it are teachers, staff, and families of the school. Please see the pool descriptions below to make sure we are all on the same page:

The C Pool may find middle-schoolers alongside their parents. A parent could be skilled enough to play at a higher level but wishes to be with family members. The challenge is to tone down one’s skills to accommodate a range of levels so that the game ends up being fun, safe, and not lopsided. The fun of it is getting to play with all ages and enjoy the comradery that comes with being part of a team. Most players in this pool have not had significant coaching but have good knowledge of the game, skating and puck handling skills and can play at a competitive level.

Pool B is the next step up. Again, we often find families playing together. No slap shots are allowed. Most B Pool players will have substantial hockey abilities, skills, knowledge, and experience. B-level players have been coached and have played considerable hockey in the past.

The A Pool is the top level and represents the most consistent and competitive play in the tournament. Most A-level players have had experience in extensive organized hockey. Slap shots are allowed, checking is not allowed, and again the expectation is to conform to the friendly spirit of the tournament.

Here is the updated Tournament Rules, including COVID precautions.

Players have the option of filling in the attached form (similar to past years) or submitting a virtual form here. The virtual form offers a way to pay by cc. Please let me know if you have any feedback for me.

Fees: We are incentivizing early registration (before March 1). Student (7-12 grade) Early- $60, Student Regular- $65. Adult Early- $70, Adult Regular $75. We are hoping to have very few day-of registration.

I have started assembling team lists here.

Thanks to all of you for your support over the years! Hope to see you in March.
